The main reason this page is up is to point people to the vocabulary packs I have put together for this course for Vtrain. I chose Vtrain because it allowed you to use rich text, images and tables in cards, because it would automatically schedule revisions of cards, allowing you to specify the periods between revisions, and because it comes with a 30 hour testing session. I managed to study for 8 weeks without running out of that session, so you can easily download the program, pull down my files, start learning the vocabulary, and then if you like it, pay the $19 to buy it. (I strongly suggest that you pay in dollars, rather than in euros. At the current exchange rates it's much cheaper. I used paypal to pay with, it's a neat online system which you can link directly to your credit card. For those people who are interested in using my packs for this course, the majority of packs contain the following. A zipfile containing four files: a vocab file, which contains the basic vocab as set out in GVE or the back of the TMA booklet; verbs; nouns; and adjectives for each section. As I am a perfectionist, I have included all words which appear either in GVE or in the back of the TMA book, or both. Verbs are all the known conjugations of the verbs for that section. Where a verb is the same as a noun, for example cūrās, which is the 2nd person singular of cūrō, and also the acc.s. of cūr-a ae, then verb is added as a comment to the Latin (comments are in grey and surrounded by /* */, like this /*verb*/). Nouns are all the known declensions of the nouns for that section. Where a noun has the same form as a verb (see above) then noun is added as a comment to the Latin. As many of the forms for nouns are similar, such as seruae gen.s. dat.s. and nom.pl. of slave woman, each case is added as a comment to the Latin form of the word. This means that there are 10 entries for each verb, nom.s. acc.s. gen.s. dat.s. abl.s. nom.pl. acc.pl. gen.pl. dat.pl. abl.pl. Adjectives basically follow the same form as nouns, with the case and gender being part of a comment, such as n.nom.s. or f.gen.pl. This would mean that there are 30 entries for each adjective, however when the form is the same for all cases, such as plēnīs dat.pl. and abl.pl. for all genders, then there is only one entry for each case (dat.pl. and abl.pl.) and the comments do not mention the gender. Because of the way that Vtrain works, you don't need to type in what is in the comment, so if you are shown the form seruae you can just type slave, and it will accept it. It will also accept slave gen.s. dat.s. nom.pl. if you want to type the whole lot in. I've used this as an example because in GVE seru-a ae is translated slave woman and seru-us i is translated slave. I've therefore put woman or female and male in as comments. As I use macrons to show long vowels, I have also saved the key I used to enter them. This opens a neat little window with the vowels with macrons so you can just click on them. Installation put the key file in the main Vtrain directory, and then put the packs in the data directory you will find in the Vtrain directory, then just follow the directions of Vtrain to set up your file and add the packs. One important note. I would not suggest you pull down all the cards at the same time, you might end up with over 100 cards to test yourself on at a single session. I would suggest you put in a set number of cards from the introduction pool to begin with, then add some more each day so as to stagger your learning curve. I would also suggest that you put in all the cards from one section, and then shuffle them in the intro box, so you get a random set of cards to learn. I also suggest you test yourself on flip (there are three radio buttons on the test window, front, back and flip. If you select flip it will randomly show you either the front or the back. It means that you are more likely to remember the words than otherwise. I advise you to open one of the *.voc files in Vtrain as a list and you will see the Latin and English sides in a tabular list, so you can get the hang of how I've set it out; remember anything grey between /* */ is a comment, and you don't have to enter it to get a right answer. Important - make sure you haven't misspelled anything or your answer will be marked as incorrect, will be sent back to the top box, and you'll have to start from the beginning with that word. Should you have any trouble with the packs I have created, or don't understand the above, please feel free to drop me a line. Remove the -nospam to get through, otherwise it will just bounce. Here are the packs I have created so far. I'd strongly
advise you read the how-to I've written above before using them, but if you want
to, feel free to drop right in and see what happens.
